Christy/Cobb provides services in the design, evaluation and assessment of Industrial Facilities, Underground Utilities and Distribution Systems.
University of Alabama at Birmingham Steam Vault Assessment
Birmimgham, Alabama
Christy/Cobb, served as the lead engineer for the structural, mechanical and electrical assessment of thirty-two vaults. The vaults were constructed by Alabama Power and turned over to UAB as a part of UAB underground steam distribution system developed in 2010. Christy/Cobb engaged UAB staff to perform the electrical evaluation, I.C. Thomasson to perform the mechanical evaluation and TTL to perform the UT testing.
Thomaston Warehouse Repairs
Thomaston, Georgia
Christy/Cobb provided design and construction phase services for the evaluation, repair and renovation of a building with 14,000 square foot of collapsed roof. Demolition and construction documents including; bracing and shoring requirements, new structural steel and steel joist support framing details and details of the replacement walls and foundation modifications were provided.
University of Alabama at Birmingham Steam Distribution System
Birmingham, Alabama
Christy/Cobb has provided the structural engineering design services for steam distribution system projects, designing underground steam manholes necessary to house the large diameter piping and valves for the steam distribution throughout the UAB campus facilities and The University Hospital.
Christy/Cobb, designed the underground manholes, thrust blocks and pipe supports for the steam and condensate return piping associated with the new steam plant servicing classrooms, administration buildings and buildings making up the University Hospital. This project included twenty two cast in place concrete underground manholes located throughout the university under streets, parking and landscaped areas. Structural steel and concrete pipe supports were also included to support the pipe forces produced by the 450º steam as determined by the project’s mechanical engineer. The pipe supports are located within the manholes as wells as throughout numerous buildings of the UAB campus and The University Hospital complex.

Valmont Craneway Evaluation
Steele, Alabama
Christy/Cobb provided the structural evaluation of existing interior and exterior craneways for support of four proposed bridge cranes each supporting two 10 ton hoists, along with a structural condition survey of the approximately 30 year old structure. The scope of work included site visits, observations, sampling, analysis based on existing drawings and loads provided from crane manufacturers and a final report with recommendations for moving forward with the project. Christy/Cobb also provided the structural drawings for the reparations needed to complete the project.
